A Young Girl’s Plea
October 8, 2011 in Poetry
and dances with flames,
leaving scars,
surviving memories,
learning lessons.
This ball and chain
she wishes to break free from –
to have them tossed into a bottomless pit,
to have them burned
at the inner core of the Earth.
“I’m only a tiny creature, ” she murmurs.
“I’m powerless, powerless, powerless! “
“I’m doing the best I can. “
“Somethings got to give. “
“So help me God! “

A Rainbow’s Message
September 11, 2011 in Poetry
Resting on a lounge chair next to a pool
The weather sunny and bright
With songs from my ipod
So soothing and calm
There was a fountain big and tall
In the middle of the pool it stood
Its water dropping from its height
Creating melodious music of its kind
I must have dozed off
Only to be woken up
By the fine water mist
Blown towards my face
I opened my eyes
And saw right in front of me
A spectacular rainbow
So beautiful and hypnotizing
God must have known I needed it
To send a rainbow so cheery
To give me a reason to smile
When I was feeling down and out
He must have wanted to see
The look on my face
When He quietly sang to me
A message so true and uplifting
Look at the colours of the rainbow
Look on the bright side of life
Each day has many different colouring
So your life’s a rainbow too

A Mother’s Love
August 8, 2011 in Poetry
You asked me to hold your hand
And said you love me the most
You gave me a kiss on my lips
And hugged me so tightly
I felt the warmth of your love
So genuine, gentle and pure
I held your tiny hand
With fingers interlocked
And I said I love you the most too
In the dimmed light I whispered goodnight
I watched you closed your eyes
As you wandered off to dreamland
Sleep well, my darling
I prayed for you a dream so sweet
That can make you laugh and giggle
A dream all 3-year-olds can enjoy
Of slides and swings
Water-plays and sand castles
Ice-creams and candies
Balloons and toys
As your grip grew softer
I still held on
I hope you know
You can trust these hands
And the heart behind these hands
In every moment of your life
In every cry and laughter
As the years go by
And as you experience life
At its best and worst
You’ll never forget these words
I don’t only love you the most at bedtime
But I love you the most every time and every day

A Snapshot of Life
August 1, 2011 in Poetry
Snapshot of life
My 3-year-old daughter and her 62-dollar-cry
I carried her to her doctor
Because she refused to walk
While waiting
She wailed and cried
So loudly
The nurses kept asking me why
I said she might have a splinter in her right foot
The nurses came
One by one
And saw only a red dot
They gave her sweets
Oh believe me
She got more sweets than she bargained for
She wanted me to hold her right foot
While she cried some more
I kept saying,’Hush, hush’
‘The doctor will see you soon’
So I held her tiny foot in my palm
Until her name was called
The doctor examined her foot
And said, ‘No splinter, just a superficial laceration’
I asked, ‘No foreign body?’
He said, ‘No, just a small dot of blood’
I carried her home
And laid her down on the sofa
I told her to rest
And I went into the kitchen
I turned around a few minutes later
Only to find her happily playing
Walking and jumping
She said, ‘Look Mommy, no more pain’
I thought to myself
I spent 50 dollars on a doctor’s consult
And 12 dollars on an antibiotic cream
All because she wailed and cried
But wouldn’t 62 dollars be all worth it
If it allayed a mother’s anxious heart
When her child is sick or in pain
Especially so
If the child had wailed and cried

A reflection on what I do for a living
July 16, 2011 in Auto-biographical
A writer and a poet I am not
I am just a scribbler
With a tiny passion
To express my thoughts in writings
Like a photographer
Who works his lens
And captures a perfect moment
With a click
So do I
A scribbler
Who play with words
And capture a perfect thought
With a pen
An oncology nurse is who I am
Chemotherapy is what I administer
From the calculation of drug dosages
To the meticulous reconstitution of drugs
And from the careful cannulation of veins
To the sterile access of central lines and ports
All these I do them best
They are my bread and butter
Needles, cannulas, syringes, worksheets and IV solutions
These are the toys I play with everyday at work
I feel my troubles pale in comparison
With the ones my patients have
They are warriors in life
Though it is sad that their lives may come to an end one day
What also matters is that they leave behind a legacy
A legacy of courage
A legacy of strength
A legacy of determination
A legacy of hope
These extraordinary human spirits
Are shown in their smiles and hellos
And lives have been touched because of them
I feel I am the strongest
When I am with them and serving them
It is my pleasure and honor
To walk with them
To hold their hands
To share their laughter
To wipe away their tears
They are all my heroes
Young and old
My very best is what I give to them
This piece is dedicated to all my cancer patients
To the ones who are here
And to the ones who have departed
With love and prayer always
